Standard deviation calculator

Calculates the population and standard deviation of numerical data.

Input

The example value has been entered. Check it immediately or change the value.

Run with Ctrl or ⌘ + Enter

Input is processed in the browser. Refreshing returns a sample value.

Result

Check or change the value using the example value result.

Supports up to 5,000 numbers. A sample standard deviation requires at least two data points.

Calculation·conversion criteria

Compare spread of numeric data and sample/population standard deviation.

Mean deviation = sum of squared deviations ÷ n; sample variance is ÷ (n−1)

Input example

Standard deviation of 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9 = 2

Mean of 2, 4, 6 is 4, and variance is 8. Population variance is 8÷3, population standard deviation is approximately 1.633, and sample standard deviation is √(8÷2)=2.

How to use

  1. Use the entered example value or change the number list item.
  2. Click Verify result and check the following result.
  3. Result can be copied if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which standard deviation should be used between the sample standard deviation and the population standard deviation?

If all interested subjects are included, consider the population value; if estimating a larger population with a sample, consider the sample value. The sample is divided by n−1, so at least two data points are required.
